With current headlines from football, soccer, volleyball, golf, & softball.

“What happened yesterday is history. What we do tomorrow is a mystery. What we do today makes a difference — the precious, present moment.” — Nick Saban

Saban Field: A New Chapter at Bryant-Denny Stadium

On September 7, 2024, Alabama made history by officially naming its field after legendary coach Nick Saban in a special ceremony before the Crimson Tide’s 42-16 victory over South Florida. The renaming honors Saban's contributions to the program, as he’s redefined what it means to be a Crimson Tide coach. The day was a celebration of his legacy, and the win that followed served as a perfect tribute to Saban’s remarkable achievements in Tuscaloosa.

Saban’s arrival in 2007 not only revitalized the Alabama football program but also made Bryant-Denny Stadium a fortress. With countless unforgettable games under his leadership, the stadium has been the backdrop to some of the Tide’s most defining moments over the last decade and a half.

The History of Bryant-Denny Stadium

Bryant-Denny Stadium, opened in 1929, has grown to hold over 101,000 fans and become one of the most intimidating venues in college football. Originally named after former university president George H. Denny, the stadium took on even greater significance in 1975 when it was renamed to also honor legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. Now, with the addition of Nick Saban's name, the legacy of greatness continues to expand.

The stadium has been the stage for numerous memorable games throughout its history, including dominant Iron Bowl wins and other important victories that led to conference and national championships. Its expansions have mirrored the growth of Alabama football, from its humble beginnings with only 12,000 seats to its current status as a colossal structure that regularly houses some of the loudest and most passionate fans in college football.

Top Games in the Saban Era at Bryant-Denny

Coach Nick Saban has built an undeniable legacy at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Let’s look back at a few of his most significant home games:

· 2007 vs. Tennessee (41-17):
Saban's first signature win at Alabama came in a blowout against rival Tennessee. Behind three touchdowns from John Parker Wilson (two of them to DJ Hall) and a stifling defense, the Tide dismantled the Volunteers, setting the stage for Alabama’s rise to prominence under Saban and starting a 15-game winning streak against the Vols.

· 2008 vs. Auburn (36-0):
In his second Iron Bowl, Saban broke a six-game losing streak to Auburn with an emphatic win. Glen Coffee’s 144-yard rushing performance and Alabama’s defensive dominance ended Auburn’s control over the rivalry and further cemented Saban's growing legacy as his Tide only lost one game in Tuscaloosa (2010) to the Tigers during his tenure.

· 2009 vs. LSU (24-15):
Alabama’s march toward the national championship continued with a tough victory against LSU. Behind Mark Ingram’s 144 rushing yards and a Julio Jones' 73-yard late touchdown catch, the Tide overcome the Tigers in this pivotal SEC showdown, pushing Alabama into the SEC Championship Game (a #1/#2 battle with Florida that the Tide won 32-13).

· 2011 vs. Arkansas (38-14):
Alabama dominated No. 14 Arkansas behind Trent Richardson's 235 all-purpose yards and Marquise Maze’s electric 83-yard punt return for a touchdown. This win showed Alabama’s strength as they surged toward the BCS National Championship after winning the #1 vs. #2 rematch with LSU.

· 2014 vs. Mississippi State (25-20):
In a Top 5 clash, Alabama knocked off No. 1 Mississippi State with an impressive defensive performance. Blake Sims led the Tide with three touchdown passes, while the defense held Dak Prescott and the Bulldogs in check, keeping Alabama’s playoff hopes alive with the victory.

· 2015 vs. LSU (30-16):
In a battle of #2 vs. #4, it was one of the most hyped matchups of the Saban era. Derrick Henry ran for 210 yards and three touchdowns as Alabama stifled Heisman candidate Leonard Fournette, marking a key victory on the way to another Saban-coached national title run.

· 2017 vs. Ole Miss (66-3):
Alabama dominated from the start, embarrassing Ole Miss in one of the most lopsided games in the Saban era. The Tide’s defense was impenetrable, and the offense scored at will, showing the dominance of the 2017 team which was headed for another national championship. At that time, it was the largest margin-of-victory for the Tide since 1979.

· 2020 vs. Georgia (41-24):
In a COVID-19-impacted season, #2 Alabama faced a #3 Georgia team at home. Down 24-20 at halftime, the Tide roared back in the second half, as Mac Jones and the offense put up 21 unanswered points. Jones passed for over 400 yards with four touchdowns. This win solidified Alabama’s undefeated regular season and eventual national championship run.

Nick Saban’s Impact on Bryant-Denny Stadium

Nick Saban’s arrival at Alabama was a turning point not just for the team but for Bryant-Denny Stadium itself. The stadium became the home of a dynasty, with Saban leading the Tide to a near-perfect home record and countless unforgettable games. Saban’s meticulous attention to detail, relentless focus, and commitment to excellence created an unmatched atmosphere, transforming Bryant-Denny into a place where dreams are made—or crushed, depending on which team you’re rooting for.
